Air Source Heat Pumps
Further Information and Our Suppliers
Air Source Heat Pumps (ASHP) are a refrigerant-based system and operate like your refrigerator at home. The system can absorb low-grade heat from the air, and raise its temperature efficiently to be suitable for space heating and/or hot water. Renewable Planet works in partnership with the major energy suppliers and system manufacturers including, Viessmann, Mitsubishi and Vaillant.
Viessmann’s Vitocal range, Mitsubishi’s Ecodan and Vaillant’s aroTHERM are air source heat pump systems that can provide water temperatures of up to 60°C (without a backup electric heater) in ambient temperatures as low as -25°C*.
Every household has different heat demands and the conditions for installing a heat pump vary. The range of accessories for both the Viessmann’s Vitocal range, Mitsubishi’s Ecodan and Vaillant’s aroTHERM are suitably flexible and comprehensive. Subject to demand, the heat pump can be supplied fully equipped. This means the heating circuit pump, expansion vessel and safety equipment have already been fully fitted. Even the modular electric instantaneous heater can be easily integrated.
Air Source Heat Pumps qualify for the Boiler Upgrade Scheme (BUS) which is a government scheme which has been introduced to encourage renewable heat technologies amongst homes, communities and businesses throughout the UK.

Frequently Asked Questions
Air source heat pumps absorb heat from the outside air, even in cold conditions, and use it to heat your home. They do this by circulating refrigerant in a cycle of evaporation and condensation. The pump increases the temperature of the extracted heat, which is then used to heat water for radiators, underfloor heating, or hot water storage systems.
Yes, air source heat pumps are considered environmentally friendly. They generate more energy than they consume, meaning they are highly efficient. Using renewable energy from the air, they can significantly reduce carbon emissions compared to traditional fossil fuel heating systems.
Most homes are suitable for air source heat pumps, but factors such as insulation levels, existing heating systems, and outdoor space are crucial. Homes with good insulation will benefit the most, as heat pumps operate efficiently when less heat escapes.
Ensure your home is well insulated, as poor insulation can reduce the efficiency of an air source heat pump. You might also need to upgrade your radiators, as heat pumps operate at lower temperatures than gas boilers.
Typically, the unit requires a clear space of at least 1 to 2 metres around it to allow for adequate airflow and prevent obstructions. The actual dimensions can vary depending on the specific model of the heat pump.
A heat pump should not be installed inside a shed or any enclosed building. Proper ventilation and airflow are essential for a heat pump to operate efficiently, and a confined space like a shed would restrict this. Furthermore, positioning the heat pump in such a location may lead to overheating and reduced efficiency. For optimal performance, it is recommended to install the heat pump on a hard surface with sufficient clearance around it, allowing for unrestricted air circulation.
Planning permission for heat pumps depends on the type of property and the specific system you intend to install. Under current guidelines, many heat pump installations fall under Permitted Development Rights, meaning you generally do not need planning permission, provided certain conditions are met. However, the rules can vary based on location, property type, and whether your home is listed or in a conservation area.
The size of the heat pump depends on the size and insulation of your home, as well as your heating requirements.
Air source heat pumps can still extract heat from the air even in sub-zero temperatures, though their efficiency may decrease slightly. Modern heat pumps are designed to work effectively in very cold weather.
Air source heat pumps do produce some noise, mainly from the fan, but modern models are generally quiet.
While a heat pump will increase electricity usage, it is highly efficient and can reduce your overall energy bills, particularly if replacing an older, less efficient heating system.
Yes, heat pump grants are eligible for funding under the Boiler Upgrade Scheme (BUS). The scheme is designed to encourage homeowners to switch from traditional gas or oil boilers to more energy-efficient, low-carbon alternatives like heat pumps.
Yes, but they may work more efficiently with larger radiators or underfloor heating, as heat pumps provide lower-temperature heat over a longer period.
Yes, many heat pumps can be connected to an existing hot water cylinder, provided it is compatible with the system.
