Designing a heat pump for a Manchester home

Most homes we survey in Manchester fall into one of three types, and each needs a different approach.

Victorian and Edwardian terraces in areas like Levenshulme, Chorlton and Whalley Range usually have solid brick walls, suspended timber floors and high ceilings. They lose more heat than newer houses, so radiator sizing matters more than the size of the heat pump. We often swap a few radiators for larger ones so the system can run at a lower temperature.

How we size your system

Before we quote, we do a room-by-room heat loss calculation to MCS standards. That tells us the size of heat pump you need, the temperature your radiators can run at, and whether your hot water cylinder will work with it. The lower the flow temperature, the cheaper the system is to run, so we design for 45°C or below wherever the radiators allow. We’d rather tell you now that two radiators need changing than leave you with a system that struggles in January.

Planning permission in Manchester

Most air source heat pumps in Manchester go in under permitted development, so you won’t need to apply for planning. The unit must pass the MCS noise calculation at your neighbour’s nearest door or window, and on closely packed terraced streets that’s the main thing we check.

What affects the cost of a heat pump installation?

The price depends on your home’s heating needs and whether radiators, the hot water cylinder or electrical supply need work. We assess these during the home survey and provide a quote for the installation your property needs.

How much does a heat pump cost to run?

A well-designed heat pump makes around three to four units of heat for every unit of electricity it uses. Whether that comes out cheaper than gas depends on your electricity tariff, and on how low a flow temperature we can design the system to run at. Several energy suppliers now have tariffs for heat pump owners, with cheaper rates at set times of day. These can make a real difference.

What happens to my gas boiler?

We take it out as part of the installation. If you’ve no other gas appliances, you can ask your supplier to close the account and remove the meter, so you stop paying the standing charge. If you keep a gas hob, the gas supply stays.

Do I need an EPC to get the grant?

Yes. To get the Boiler Upgrade Scheme grant, you need a valid Energy Performance Certificate issued within the last ten years. If you don’t have one, you’ll need to get one before we can apply. You no longer have to fit loft or cavity wall insulation first to qualify.

How long does installation take?

A typical installation takes two to five days, depending on any radiator, cylinder, pipework or electrical changes. We confirm the expected schedule and likely disruption before work starts.
