Renewable Planet supports architects from the early stages of residential and commercial projects, providing technical advice, system specification and installation for air source heat pumps, solar PV and battery storage. By becoming involved during the design phase, we help ensure renewable technologies integrate efficiently with the building design while supporting compliance with current Building Regulations.

Design & Planning

Renewable energy systems should be considered during the design stage rather than after construction begins. We work with architects to review layouts, plant space, external equipment locations and building performance requirements before specifications are finalised.

This early review helps identify plant space requirements, external unit locations and service routes before they affect the wider building design.

Early involvement allows renewable technologies to be integrated into the overall design, reducing the need for changes during construction and ensuring systems remain practical to install and maintain.

Technical Design & Specification

Our technical team provides the information required to specify renewable energy systems with confidence. We assist with heat loss calculations, system sizing, plant layouts, equipment selection and technical documentation to support the wider design team. Where required, we also coordinate electrical requirements and renewable energy system layouts to ensure they integrate effectively with the overall building design.

By coordinating renewable technologies alongside other building services, we help avoid conflicts during construction, reduce the need for design changes and ensure systems are designed for long-term performance.

Installation & Commissioning

Once construction reaches the appropriate stage, our installation engineers deliver the renewable energy systems in accordance with the agreed specification. Following installation, systems are commissioned, tested and certified where applicable before handover to the client.

Successful renewable energy installations depend on effective communication between the architect, structural engineer, M&E consultant, contractor and installation team.

What We Can Offer You

Early Design Input

The earlier we see the drawings, the easier it is. A heat pump needs an outdoor unit position with airflow and a sensible distance from neighbours, and a cylinder cupboard that's often bigger than a combi boiler would need. Solar needs roof area facing the right way, clear of rooflights and vents. Sorting those at RIBA Stage 2 or 3 costs nothing. Moving them on site does.

Heat Loss Calculations

We do room-by-room heat loss calculations to MCS standards from your drawings and U-values, so the heat pump, emitters and cylinder are sized for the building as designed.

Part L Compliance

Under the current Part L, a heat pump and solar PV are usually the simplest way to meet the energy and emission targets on a new home. We provide the system details your SAP assessor needs.

Future Homes Standard

The Future Homes Standard was published in March 2026 and comes into force on 24 March 2027, with transitional arrangements for schemes already submitted. New homes will need low-carbon heating, which in practice means a heat pump or heat network. They'll also need on-site renewable generation, usually solar PV, sized against the ground floor area. We can design both in from the start.

Technical Design Support

We help choose equipment from recognised manufacturers, and give the M&E consultant and contractor the technical information they need: flow temperatures, emitter sizes and plant space.

Installation and Commissioning

We install, commission and certify the systems ourselves, register them with MCS, and hand over the documentation for the building file.

Frequently Asked Questions

Can a heat pump meet the Future Homes Standard on its own?

Not usually. As well as low-carbon heating, the standard needs on-site renewable generation and a good fabric specification, so most homes will pair a heat pump with solar PV.

Is the Boiler Upgrade Scheme available on new builds?

No. New-build homes aren’t eligible, but self-builds are, which can make a real difference on a one-off house.

When should we involve you?

Ideally once the layout is fixed but before the services are drawn, so plant space, unit positions and pipe routes can go in the drawings rather than being found on site.
